　　Hi, my name is Erinn Andrews, I am a former admission officer at Stanford University.

　　Now I work with really interesting, strong high school student who are applying to most selective universities in the US.

　　嗨!我是Erinn Andrews，斯坦福大学前招生官。我现在帮助有趣，有实力的学生申请最顶尖的美国本科大学。

　　Today I am going to talk about two case studies that involve real chinese students who went to high school in China and apply to most selective university in US.

　　今天，我想跟大家分享两个真实的中国学生申请美国顶尖大学的案例。

　　As well as many competitive Chinese applicants will have self- studied for 10 or more Ap classes and taken tests and gotten 5 on those.

　　很多有竞争力的中国申请者会自学10门以上的AP，并得到5分。

　　Because she took it three times, I suspect she was trying to increase that evidence-based reading and writing score, and she wasn’t able to get it above 670.

　　她考了3次SAT，所以我估计她是想提高阅读分数到670以上，但是并没有成功。

　　So I have some hesitation around her application on the testing front.

　　我对这个申请者最大的问号就是她的考试成绩。

　　But, Again, testing is not the most important thing, it just represents a few hours of her time on the weekend. Her transcript will carry more weight on that sense.

　　But really what i want to think about and look at are her extra curriculum activities.

　　Because even if the student has strong academics and strong testing, that’s not enough unfortunately, to have them be admitted to those selective universities.

　　即使一个学生有很强的学术和考试成绩，很遗憾，顶尖美国本科大学也不一定会录取她。

　　So before I even look at her extracurriculars. I am going to be thinking about what she intends to major in. Because that’s going to set the stage for the theme that will emerge in her application and her profile.

　　She was part of the social innovation competition. And she was a graphic designer for her group.

　　她参加了一个社会创新大赛，而且她是作为平面设计师参加的。

　　What I like about this and why I started, is because among all the things of her extra profile, this is the one that stands out the most.

　　我非常喜欢这个，因为这是她整体活动档案中最杰出的一个。

　　She was involved in a competition beyond her school level, at a much higher level. And her team won the best social innovation award, and with that even came a monetary award.

　　So that shows me that her skill set and her team skill set was validated by a third party, and that brings additional validity to her application and what she said she is interested in and good at.

　　But when I take a step back and look at her application overall, she is clearly a bright student who’s done a lot of things and she certainly don’t have free time.

　　But the biggest hole for me in her application are her testing profile, I am still very concerned about her IBT, and her TOEFL scores.

　　And when I read her essay, some language inconsistencies and awkward phrasings emerged, which further confirmed my hesitation about her TOEFL score and her evidence-based reading and writing score.

　　So this is the big point of hesitation for me. And I just did’t feel like she has enough focus on building her profile on what she hoped to become and develop.

　　And she just had a few things on that, some are quite interesting but it wasn’t deep and prolong enough, for me to really be very excited about this applicant, given the large applicant pool of really extraordinary students.

　　So for me at the end of the day, I wouldn’t have admitted the student even she is very strong on many fronts.
